Newlove jury sent home
The jury in the trial of five teenagers accused of kicking a man to death has been sent home for the night. Father-of-three Garry Newlove, 47, was attacked outside his home in Fearnhead, Warrington, Cheshire, on August 10 after a confrontation with a gang of youths. The prosecution at Chester Crown Court says the sales manager was punched to the ground and kicked "as if he were a football". Mr Newlove had left his house barefoot to remonstrate with a gang over vandalism to cars parked outside. He was knocked unconscious and died at Warrington General Hospital two days later. Five teenagers - two aged 17, a 16-year-old, a 15-year-old and Adam Swellings, a 19-year-old from Crewe, Cheshire - deny murder. .

Your standard (and tired) line seems to be to accuse anyone who has a beef with the team, coach or ownership of being a Jets fan. You are the one who needs to get real. If all of us were like you, ownership would have absolutely no incentive to put a championship caliber product on the field. We are in the largest media market in the country. Yes, there is revenue sharing but there is still ample opportunity for the Giants to be more profitable than all but a handful of teams in the league. There is no reason why we shouldn't be in the same class as New England and Indianapolis. Ownership of this team since 1991 has consistently defined a successful year as "being in the race for the playoffs on the last weekend of the season". With the bar set so low (especially in the age of free agency) it is no wonder that we are where we are with this team.
Minnesota man sentenced for trying to hire hit man
A Minnesota man has been sentenced in North Dakota to serve five years in prison for trying to hire a hit man to paralyze or kill his estranged wife in Fargo. Forty-eight-year-old David Steffen of Frazee (Fray-zee') pleaded guilty to soliciting felony aggravated assault. East Central Judicial District Judge John Irby in Fargo called the facts of the case "chilling." The charge against Steffen stemmed from a series of taped conversations he had with an undercover federal agent who posed as a hit man in 2006. Authorities say Steffen planned to pay the agent $5,500 to paralyze his wife and $12,000 if she died. Steffen's attorney, Lorelle Moeckel, told Irby that Steffen was on medication that was prescribed improperly and drinking heavily when the contact with the agent took place.
