Michael Clarke seals Test win
Fortunate decisions notwithstanding, Andrew Symonds also put aside the race row affecting him to produce perhaps his finest Test performance and claim man of the match honours. On top of his 162 not out, the Queenslander's off-spin made key breakthroughs on a dying SCG wicket to help Australia steadily make inroads. The win means Australia heads to Perth 2-0 up in the series, and though it is not yet won, the side retains the Border-Gavaskar trophy. Ponting's men also equalled the mark of 16 straight wins set by a Steve Waugh-led side in 2001 and can top that milestone with a win in Perth. Earlier in the day it was the typically determined Mike Hussey that saw Australia pile on a substantial second-innings lead. With fans still drifting in slowly courtesy of an early start, Hussey (145 not out) showed no ill-effects from a night's sleep stuck on 87 and quickly moved to his eighth Test century.
Spanish king's 'shut up' reflects complex colonial history
King Juan Carlos's blunt question instantly became the campaign slogan of the day for enemies of President Hugo Chávez. It blared from YouTube clips everywhere, rang out from cellphones in both Spain and Venezuela, and screamed from T-shirts all over Caracas. In the excitement, the context of the exchange was largely brushed over: In addition to an epic spectacle, the comic opera offered a terrific glimpse into the unendingly complicated relations between Spain and its former colonies. First, what happened: Seizing on a moment when the king had returned from a polemical tour of small Spanish enclaves near Morocco, Chávez used a summit in Chile of Latin American and Iberian leaders to taunt the Spaniards, applying the word "fascist" to a right-wing former Spanish prime minister who wasn't even there.
